Identität, Geschlecht, Erinnerung, Kolonialismus. Das sind die Themen, mit denen sich die deutsch-kenianische Multimedia-, Installations- und Performancekünstlerin Syowia Kyambi beschäftigt. In ihrer Arbeit nimmt sie eine kritische Haltung gegenüber den kulturellen Machtstrukturen ein, die die Konstruktion des Selbst im Kontext der postkolonialen Erfahrungswelt prägen. Eine Erfahrung, die ihr als in Kenia geborenen und dort lebenden Künstlerin vertraut ist.

Syowia Kyambis Präsenz im globalen Kunstbetrieb wird durch zahlreiche Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen sowie Künstler-Residencies in Ländern wie Belgien, Deutschland, Finnland, Frankreich, Kenia, Mali, Mexiko, Schweden, Simbabwe, Südafrika und in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika unterstrichen. Im Laufe ihrer Karriere hat sie mehrere Auszeichnungen und Stipendien gewonnen, u.a. den UNESCO Award for the Promotion of the Arts und den Art in Global Health Grant der Wellcome Trust Fund in Großbritannien.

In ihrer Ausstellung Double Consciousness, von dem Kunsthistoriker und Kurator Alejandro Perdomo Daniels kuratiert, nimmt Syowia Kyambi Bezug auf einen zentralen Begriff des US-amerikanischen Philosophen und Soziologen W.E.B. Du Bois, der als führender Vertreter der Bürgerrechtsbewegung und Vordenker des Panafrikanismus gilt. Mit multimedialen produktionsästhetischen Mitteln reflektiert die Ausstellung die internen Spaltungen, die bei der Identitätsbildung in der postkolonialen Gesellschaft Afrikas stattfinden.

Identity, Gender, Memory, Colonialism. These are the topics that the German-Kenyan multimedia, installation and performance artist Syowia Kyambi deals with. In her work, she takes a critical stance on the cultural power structures that shape the construction of the self in the postcolonial world. An experience she is very aware of as a Kenyan born and living artist.

Syowia Kyambi's presence in the global art scene is underlined trough numerous solo and group exhibitions as well as artist residencies in countries like Belgium, Germany, Finland, France, Kenya, Mali, Mexico, Sweden, Zimbabwe, South Africa and USA. In the course of her career she was awarded with several prizes and scholarships, such as the UNESCO Award for the Promotion of the Arts and the Art in Global Health Grant from the Wellcome Trust Fund in United Kingdom.

In her exhibition Double Consciousness, curated by art historian and curator Alejandro Perdomo Daniels, Syowia Kyambi refers to a central notion by US-American philosopher and sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois who is considered to be a leading figure of the civil rights movement and mastermind of Pan-Africanism. Using multimedia production means, the exhibition reflects the internal divisions that take place in the formation of identity in Africa's postcolonial society.
